How cases work
Cases need a key to open and return a random item by rarity tier. The rarest tiers (covert, knives) have very low odds, which is what makes those skins expensive.
The math
On average, opening cases costs more than the skins are worth — the 'house edge' of randomness. Buying the exact skin you want on a marketplace is almost always cheaper and risk-free.
